GLOSSARY

Asset Goal Progress

Planning & Decision Process

IN PLAIN ENGLISH

How close you are to a goal like "£10,000 of cash", "£250,000 net worth" or "debts paid down to £50,000".

FULL DEFINITION

How far a value goal for something you own or owe — an asset class, total assets, net worth or your debts — has come towards its target.

EXAMPLE

Cash of £2,000 against a £8,000 emergency-fund goal is 25%. Debts of £150,000, down from £175,000 when you set a goal to reach £100,000, is (175,000 − 150,000) ÷ (175,000 − 100,000) = 33%.

HOW IT'S CALCULATED

Building up: progress = the figure today ÷ your target × 100. Paying down (debts): progress = (what you owed when you set the goal − what you owe now) ÷ (what you owed then − your target) × 100, or 100% once you're at or under the target. Both are capped at 100% for the bar. The figures are the Balance Sheet's, for your whole portfolio. A goal on net worth or total assets waits (shows "—") while any asset class is still being valued, and a goal on one class waits while that class is, rather than showing progress on a figure that leaves part out.
