GLOSSARY

Cost basis

Holding Metrics

IN PLAIN ENGLISH

What you actually paid for a holding, fees included.

WHERE YOU MEET IT

Holding Cost for each holding and Total Cost for the portfolio, worked out with average cost. Fees count if you include them in the cost you record.

WATCH OUT FOR

Buying in stages moves it — the average is what matters, not your first purchase.

FULL DEFINITION

The remaining cost basis for a single holding, in your portfolio currency.

EXAMPLE

Bought 100 shares for £1,000, sold 40. Holding Cost = £1,000 − (40 × £10) = £600.

HOW IT'S CALCULATED

Holding Cost = total buy cost − (shares sold × average cost per share), where average cost per share = total buy cost ÷ total shares bought. Each buy's cost is entered in the stock's own trading currency and converted into your portfolio currency at the exchange rate on its purchase date, so later FX moves do not change what it cost; a buy whose purchase-date rate was unavailable is converted at today's rate until the holding is next saved.
