GLOSSARY

Realised gain

Portfolio Metrics

IN PLAIN ENGLISH

A gain or loss locked in by selling.

WHERE YOU MEET IT

The Realised Gains tile in Stat Tiles, worked out with average cost.

WATCH OUT FOR

It isn't a tax calculation: HMRC's same-day and 30-day rules can change which shares count as sold.

FULL DEFINITION

Profit or loss locked in from shares that have been sold, adjusted for holdings written down to zero.

EXAMPLE

You sold 40 shares for £600 that cost £400. Realised Gains = £200.

HOW IT'S CALCULATED

Realised Gains = (sale proceeds − cost basis of sold shares) − write-offs, where cost basis of sold shares = shares sold × average cost per share. Any holding still held but priced at zero has its remaining cost basis treated as a realised loss here (and added back to Unrealised Gains) so the two figures don't double-count the write-off.
